Exploring the PYP Through Books

PYP Transdisciplinary Books

Books in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) are more than stories — they are powerful tools that help children make connections across disciplines, explore big ideas, and develop conceptual understanding. A thoughtfully chosen picture book can spark inquiry, encourage reflection, and open conversations that connect naturally to the transdisciplinary themes of the PYP.

Through PYP Transdisciplinary Book Reviews, we explore children’s literature not only for its literary value but also for the opportunities it provides for inquiry-based learning. Each review considers how a book connects to:

  • The IB Learner Profile
  • Approaches to Learning (ATL)
  • Key concepts and conceptual understanding
  • and the six transdisciplinary themes

From stories about kindness and identity to books that inspire creativity, environmental awareness, or perspective-taking, these reviews aim to support teachers, librarians, and families in selecting meaningful literature for young learners.

Whether used in the classroom, library, or at home, books become invitations to wonder, question, connect, and act — at the heart of the PYP experience.
